Eucharistic hymns
Eucharistic hymns
The eucharistic presence and love of Christ always inspire the human heart and mind. There are a lot of poems and
works of art of different kinds which try to express, evoke and draw closer to this inexpressible love that is constantly
being given.
Here we offer a rich treasury of hymns to inspire and nourish the Christian soul and to provide support for the
personal encounter and spiritual growth.
Zion, to Thy Savior Singing! (St. Thomas Aquinas)
Zion, to thy Savior singing,
To thy Prince and Shepherd bringing
Sweetest hymns of love and praise,
Thou wilt never reach the measure
Of His worth, by loudest treasure
Of thy most exalted lays.
Choirs of angels on Him gazing,
Fail to trace the mystery, raising
Wonder at His boundless love;
Human reason cannot fathom
Depths that lie beneath the Atom
Whence the Bread of Life we prove.
Far beyond all praising,
Telling or arraying,
Is the Sacrament divine;
’Tis the heavenly manna,
Falling from the Banner
Of salvation’s sacred Sign.
Here beneath these signs are hidden
Priceless things to sense forbidden;
Signs, not things, are all we see:
Flesh from bread, and Blood from wine,
Yet is Christ in either sign,
All entire, confessed to be.
Whoso of this Food partaketh,
Christ divideth not, nor breaketh:
He is whole to all that taste;
Whether one or thousands eat,
All receive the self-same Meat,
Nor the less for others’ waste.
Both the wicked and the good
Eat of this celestial Food:
But with ends how opposite!
Here ’tis life: and there ’tis death:
The same, yet issuing from one breath,
With such diverse outcome fit.
When the priest the Host divideth,
Nothing of the Lamb there frayeth;
He is whole in every part.
By the sign the signifieth
Without change He there abideth,
Ever dwelling in the heart.
Lo! the Angel’s Food is given
To the pilgrim who hath striven;
See the Children’s Bread from heaven,
Which on dogs may not be spent!
Truth the ancient types fulfilling,
Isaac bound, a victim willing,
Paschal lamb, its life-blood spilling,
Manna to the fathers sent.
Good Shepherd, Bread life-giving,
Us, Thy grace and life receiving,
Feed and shelter evermore;
Thou on earth our weakness guiding,
We in heaven with Thee abiding,
With all saints sing evermore.
Amen. Hallelujah
Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory (St. Thomas Aquinas)
Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory,
Of His flesh the mystery sing,
Of the blood, all price exceeding,
Shed by our immortal king,
Destined, for the world’s redemption,
From a noble womb to spring.
Of a pure and spotless virgin,
Born for us, His love to show,
He, as man, with man conversing,
Stayed, the seeds of truth to sow;
Then He closed in wondrous fashion,
This His life on earth below.
On the night of that last supper,
Seated with His chosen band,
He, the paschal victim eating,
First fulfills the law’s command;
Then as food to all His brethren
Gives Himself with His own hand.
Christ, the Word made flesh, by speaking,
Earthly bread to flesh He turns;
Wine becomes His blood so precious—
Unconceived in human terms!
