When we pray, we become instruments of peace. Our Lady calls us three times in a row: “Pray, pray, pray”. Repetition helps us to remember an important thing. Today we are to learn the precious advice that the only thing that can overcome evil and turmoil is prayer. Prayer for peace is a decision for peace. We choose what will reign in our hearts.
We hear about violence, hatred, injustice, wars that are increasing. From the daily news we sense fear, insecurity, sadness, helplessness. We cannot stop evil with human strength. We see great buildings, churches, hospitals collapsing before our eyes, all that has been built for years is being destroyed in a matter of minutes. It is clear that we humans cannot stop evil. It is impossible.
God sees the crisis we are in. That is why he sends Our Lady down to earth, as she told us on January 2, 2018, “When love is beginning to disappear on earth, when the way of salvation is not being found, I, the mother, am coming to help you to come to know true faith – living and profound – so as to help you to truly love“.
„I am with you and we pray together. Help me with prayer, little children, that Satan may not prevail. His power of death, hatred, and fear has visited the earth. Therefore, little children, return to God and to prayer, to fasting and to renunciation, for all those who are downtrodden, poor, and have no voice in this world without God. Little children, if you do not return to God and His Commandments, you do not have a future. That is why He sent me to you to guide you“ (February 25, 2022).
Peace in the world begins in prayer on our knees. Prayer changes us. God is present in the midst of all chaos. The peace Our Lady speaks of is not the absence of war. It is a deep inner peace that comes from a relationship with God. A nun in a convent in the city of Kharkov, Ukraine, which is in a war zone, gave testimony of how, despite the roar of guns and explosions, she experiences a deep peace in her heart. True peace comes from the prayer of surrender into God’s hands.
Our Lady leads us to pray first for peace in our own hearts, then for peace in our families, and then for peace in the world. Peace is a gift from God. When we accept it, it brings us to love our neighbors. We become more sensitive to the needs of our neighbors. Every good deed, every smile, every kind word is a prayer for peace. Prayer for peace is also forgiveness. Prayer for peace is also renunciation and fasting. Prayer for peace is prayer under the cross and with the cross in our hands. Jesus gave his life so that we might have peace in our hearts. Uniting our own sufferings with Jesus’ is the greatest prayer.
Prayer for peace is both personal and common prayer in the family, prayer in prayer communities. The most popular prayer for peace in the School of Our Lady is the rosary, as the most powerful weapon against evil. The Holy Father John Paul II also encourages us saying, „By its nature as an insistent choral petition in harmony with Christ’s invitation to “pray ceaselessly” (Lk 18:1), the Rosary allows us to hope that, even today, the difficult “battle” for peace can be won“ (Rosarium Virginis Mariae).
Let us pray:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen. (Peace Prayer by St. Francis of Assisi)
