Return to God (Fr. Lubo Kurtovych, OFM)

Our Lady of Medjugorje’s August 25, 2026 monthly message:

“Dear children, today I am calling you: return to God, return to prayer, so that you may become carriers of peace. Pray, little children, for peace that is in danger; and may prayer begin to flow anew from your hearts and from your families, so that, in joy, you may feel the voice of Jesus in your hearts: “Peace be with you”. Be, little children, carriers of peace and prayer for all those who do not pray. I am with you and I pray for you before My Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to My call” (with Ecclesiastical approval).

In Her July message Our Lady talks about the spiritual state in which many hearts are in. Darkness and peacelessness took over many souls. However Our Lady does not cease to call those who are open to Her Motherly invitation. Our Lady knows that the last word is God’s but hands and hearts which are open to God are needed so that He may act within human hearts and in the lives of those who are far away from the source of light and peace.

In this message as in many others Our Lady calls us to return to God. With Her Motherly Heart She sees clearly our spiritual state and the situation we are in. Today Mother Mary is to us like the prophets whom God sent to His chosen people when they had distanced themselves from Him. The prophets called their people to return to God.

And the prophet Joel says to the people: “Yet even now, – declares the Lord, – return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:12-13). When we rely on what cannot provide us with safety then destruction is inevitable and the fruits of this way of life are peacelessness, anxiety and torment.

“If you do not rely on Me, you will not stand firm” (Isaiah 7:9b).

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

Trusting Jesus and relying on His word gives us strength to endure all the trials and difficulties in our lives. We can often hear people saying: “I have no idea where I found the strength to do this, to endure it and get through it. This is God’s power, the power of the Resurrection, the strength that flows from trust and belief in God.

There is no person who has not been burdened by a cross. None of us wants the cross, our nature resists the cross and suffering. The first thing we do in front of the cross is what the disciples of Jesus did when Jesus was crucified. All of them scattered and ran away.

The Virgin Mary teaches us not to escape the cross but to stay at the foot of the cross, on our feet, in devotion and prayer. Only in this way can we feel the power of Jesus’s words that He told His scared disciples as the Risen One: “Peace be with you!” At the most difficult moments when the disciples were desperate and confused Mary gathered them in the upper room of the Last Supper. They were united and steadfast in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The Mother. She unites the apostles and in prayer they are waiting for the power of the Holy Spirit Who will transform them and make everything new. There are no perfect people, families, marriages or communities. There are real people with their weaknesses, sins and burdens as well as with their gifts.

From Mary we learn to unite, gather and encourage others to pray for us to experience the power of Jesus’s peace first in our hearts and then spread it wherever the Lord has set us to live and grow.

Prayer

Virgin Mary, the Queen of Peace, we thank You that You do not cease to call and gather Your children around the world uniting them in prayer. You did this as the Mother of the Church at its foundation gathering the apostles in prayer. We thank You for all graces which God has granted us through You and for all the hearts that have opened to Your call and for all those who will yet open themselves and walk the path toward God which You show us.

In a special way we place into Your Immaculate Heart and into Your Hands our prayers for peace in human hearts, in families and among all people. May God’s blessing and peace be poured into every heart where war and hatred reign. May a miracle of peace happen through our prayers—a miracle which God alone wants and desires to grant to everyone who perseveres in prayer and seeks Him. Amen
